Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ):

Foreign Trade Zone ConsultantsAccording to the U.S. Department of Commerce, a foreign trade zone is a restricted access site, in or adjacent to a Customs port of entry, operated pursuant to public utility principles under the sponsorship of a corporation granted authority by the Board and under supervision of the Customs Service [15 CFR 400.2 (e)]. The purpose of the Foreign Trade Zone Act of 1934, as part of the "New Deal" by President Roosevelt, was to create and retain jobs, stimulate the economy and promote international trade. Currently, the total value of merchandise shipped through FTZs is more than $240 billion annually.
